It’s been a long time since I last had a steamboat or BBQ feast, can’t even remember when was the last time I indulged in either. If you are dining with a large group or even with a few family members or friends, some may prefer steamboat whereas others may be more inclined towards BBQ so how about a restaurant that has both?

Moo Kata Steamboat & BBQ House has steamboat, grill & hot plate so if you are dining with another companion, you can choose any of the 2 methods of cooking. Better yet in a group of 3 or more in which case you can try all 3 methods. For those who don’t live in the area, the restaurant can be a little tricky to locate because although it’s within Kuchai Lama Food Court, it’s not along Jalan Kuchai Lama. There is a food court along Jalan Kuchai Lama near the wet market but that is NOT Kuchai Lama Food Court. Kuchai Lama Food Court is on the way to Jalan Puchong if you are travelling along Jalan Klang Lama from Pearl Point. This food court relocated from Kuchai Entrepreneur’s Park.

Confusion aside, there is plenty of parking (free) at Kuchai Lama Food Court. Having a steamboat cum BBQ restaurant within a food court may seem rather unexpected but there’s plenty of space there and the restaurant can easily accommodate 300 diners. The concept is buffet-style so you can stuff yourself to your heart or your stomach’s content. It’s just RM38 per person, very reasonable considering there are about 120 varieties of food. Help yourself to copious and unlimited amounts of lemon tea or barley water (I drank cup after cup). All the food is well covered and the raw meats and seafood are kept in refrigerated compartments.

There are lots of vegetables choices and even a pot of tea eggs!

You can indulge in so many types of marinated meats and seafood, the honey chicken and pork are especially delicious whether you put them in the steamboat or hot plate. It can get a bit sweaty there and I did wish the chopsticks for turning over the meats on the grill and hot plate weren’t the average wooden disposable kind as they’re too short and flimsy for the job. The gaps on the grill are quite wide so it was a bit of work placing them on the grill and turning the meats over, had to use a lot of care and caution otherwise they slip easily on to the charcoal below. The steamboat pots are also over charcoal. We had the house soup and tom yam for the steamboat, both equally delicious with the many varieties of meats, vegetable and seafood.

The sauces are exceptional and all made by Moo Kata. The Moo Kata sauce is quite spicy but incredibly piquant. The seafood sauce is a blend of green chilli and coriander, it went well with meats so it’s not just for complementing seafood.

Check out their home-made tom yam paste which can be added into the steamboat soups for extra “oomph”!

After all the boiling, grilling and hot plating, it is time to cool down with ice creams and their home-made dessert, a very special durian cake very similar to mille feuille as it has a creamy filling and is a layered puff pastry.
