Dubu Dubu @ MidValley

My last experience in a Korean restaurant was during one Chinese New Year years ago. Unlike the majority of the population, I’m not crazy about Korean food, Korean music or Korean dramas. Sure, I have watched the occasional K-drama but the same old, same old plot of boy meets girl only to have a romance as rocky as a pebbly beach and so many tear-jerker scenes doesn’t make me want to watch another episode.

Anyway this is about food and when Dubu Dubu at MidValley first opened, I thought it was an Indonesian restaurant. I didn’t dine there till last month since I had a Watsons dining voucher which entitled me to a free meal if I spent above RM10. Fair enough!

The free meal was their signature dish, Soondubu Jigae (chicken/RM15.90, beef/RM17.90, seafood/RM18.90) which is served with their special Dubu Dubu rice and 3 banchan (side dishes, 1 of which is kimchi). I wonder why pasta is one of the side dishes. I had a taste of the broth, rather unspicy and didn’t make me want to take a second helping. The seafood looked a lot smaller than what is shown in their menu but I know, it’s all for illustration purposes only but sometimes it would be nice to get what you see.

My dish was the Honey Garlic Chicken Bulgogi Set/RM17.90 and I didn’t realize it came with a sunny side up egg otherwise I would have requested for the egg to be fully cooked as I so dislike runny egg yolks. There was plenty of onions on the chicken which added to the sweetness of the meat. The meat was very tender and there was quite a lot of it. Filling, tasty and I ate everything except the kimchi. I have never acquired a taste for kimchi & I never will.

barley

Roasted barley is RM3.50 whether you have it hot or cold. Having it cold was a mistake as there was too much ice and the taste was very diluted. Better to have it hot.
