What better way to usher in the Year Of The Snake than with a make-up collection that is named “Year Of The Snake Collection” which is MAC’s 2nd collaboration with photographer, Chen Man. If the snake is your Chinese zodiac sign, then products from this collection would be even more special as the eye shadows, lipsticks and powder have the snake design embossed on them. I passed two of the products from the collection to guest reviewer Misty for her consideration.

For Chinese New Year, MAC has released a brand new, lusciously packaged and marketed line to the theme of the year’s zodiac animal, the snake! See, I’m a snake baby myself. So it was an awesome moment when I wound the lipstick bullet out to see the intricately embossed scaly pattern winding all over. ’twas a beautiful sight, and set against the nude Freckletone shade, was a beauty even on its own.

Now on to its use as makeup. MAC Freckletone is a semi-sheer, peach type nude with a Lustre finish, and in my opinion, one of the most versatile nudes in MAC’s permanent stable. Online reviews have had everyone from the very fair to those with chocolaty skin touting it as a favourite. And this is why it works for me : personally, I like my nude lipsticks “real” nude, no hint of pinkness. Those tend to clash with my skin, dulling it out. On the other hand, a total concealer lip shade drains the little remaining colour out of my face. But Freckletone with its slight bit of peachy warmth blends into my natural pigment for a true-ish nude colour without washing it out.

The texture is very nice, slick and applies easily. I didn’t get full opacity, and the lipstick did settle in my lip lines The good this about freckletone is that it wasn’t as weak as some of the Lustres I’ve tried. The lipstick wears for about 4 hours with sips of water before disappearing. I think this is a fab purchase. The lipstick is priced at RM68, same as a regular tube of Freckletone, but with an added decorative touch. Collectors will love it for sure!

An iridescent, royal purple, Push the Edge Pigment feels like an appropriate repromote for the collection. MAC describes it as a “deep, bright purple with pearl” To me, it looks like an eggplant-esque base with a cool blue sheen and pink-red shimmer. As with all loose pigments, different applications get you different finishes.

A little bit of pigment yields a sheer wash of iridescent violet, while piled on, the deeper, matte purple base shows better. My favourite application method is with water, which brings out the brightness and shimmer the best. Push the Edge wore for 8 hours on me before losing dullness, and applied dry without primer it tends to go after 4 hours or less, depending on how much is packed on. Generally, fallout is to be expected with pigments so a little primer or base goes a long way. Push the Edge pigment is priced at RM82.
