René Furterer is one of those haircare brands which is a little under-publicised. If I hadn’t gone for the Essential Scalp Treatment at their salon at Pavilion, I might still be in the dark as to how good their products are. I was particularly impressed with the Complexe 5 which is massaged into scalp.

Over forty years ago, René Furterer designed treatments that treat both scalp and hair. These treatment products are rich in essential oils and plant extracts, combining effectiveness and sensory pleasure. At the beginning of the 1950’s, his wife, a hair stylist, drew his attention to the hair damage caused by bleaching, color treatments and permanent waves. As early as 1957, René Furterer created his own personalized hair care method and developed products based on essential oils and plant extracts known for their therapeutic as well as aromatic properties. The essential oils are mainly used for their deep-cleansing, stimulating (warm essential oils) and soothing (cold essential oils) action.

The essential oils are mainly used for their deep-cleansing, stimulating (warm essential oils) and soothing (cold essential oils) action. René Furterer has selected twelve essential oils for their specific therapeutic and aromatic virtues. The essential oils can be identified by the different sensations that they give. Thyme and pine essential oils, for instance, are called “hot”; they have a rubefacient effect, which gives a feeling of heat. Mint and eucalyptus are called “cool”, as they have a soothing, cooling effect.

René Furterer recommends 3 steps to complete hair and scalp care:-

PREPARE

With regenerating concentrate featuring stimulating essential oils : Complexe 5

Complexe 5, a genuine regenerating plant concentrate and the essential treatment at the core of the René Furterer Method, is endowed with the stimulating properties of orange and lavender essential oils. Complexe 5 activates the microcirculation of the blood right to the root of the hair, tones the scalp and brings strength and beauty back to hair.

Complexe 5 is used once a week with a scalp massage. Apply section by section, leave in for 5 minutes. The warm essential oils of Complexe 5 may cause a warming sensation, depending upon the sensitivity of the scalp. I don’t feel a little warming sensation but not as intense as it felt at the salon, perhaps because I don’t massage it in as vigorously and expertly as they do at the salon. It’s always different when you do it yourself but I do love the scent. It smells divine! This is by far the most wonderful scalp treatment I have ever used.

If you are really diligent in applying Complexe 5 just like what they do at the salon, then follow these steps:-

1. Holding your fingers together, massage scalp as if pushing the base of skull up to the top of the head. Circular motion going outwards should be slow.
2. Holding fingers together, make small back and forth vibrating motions, going from the forehead to the top of the head. This tones up the scalp.
3. To finish, with both hands flat, press down on the scalp, let hands slide down from the forehead to the nape.

Carthame Moisturizing Milk Shampoo RM75/150ml

WASH

With treatment shampoos specially suited to scalp type

René Furterer has different ranges to suit different scalp/hair types. There’s the Curbicia range for oily scalp and hair, Carthame range for dry scalp and hair, Karite range for very dry scalp and hair, Triphasis range for progressive hair loss, Melaleuca range for anti-dandruff, Astera range for sensitive, irritated scalp, Okara range for colour treated hair, Tonucia range for devitalized, weakened hair, Naturia range for frequent use, all hair types and Volumia range for fine, limp hair.

I received Carthame Moisturizing Milk Shampoo for dry scalp and hair. This shampoo is recommended for anyone looking for soft, bouncy hair that is easy to detangle and greater comfort for the scalp. It has a beautiful botanical scent but when combined with Complexe 5, the whole bath room smells like a flower room after my shower. This shampoo didn’t cause much hair fall-out and felt comforting for my scalp but my hair definitely needed conditioner after rinsing as it felt tangled.

René Furterer chose Carthame for its moisturizing properties. Originally from the Orient, Carthame (Safflower) a particular species of thistle, is recognized for its hydrating and nourishing virtues. The Carthame oil, very rich in essential fatty acids necessary for scalp and hair beauty, is extracted from its seeds. This oil and a specific moisturizing complex are combined with the cleansing essential oil of orange, hazelnut oil and vitamin B5 to provide protection, restore essential hair care smoothness, elasticity and softness to dry scalp and hair.

Carthame Gentle Hydro-Nutritive Mask RM75/100ml

TREAT

With personalized deep-acting treatments

This creamy conditioner has the most AMAZING scent, makes me want to run out and get a back-up. After using this conditioner, I might never go back to drugstore conditioners. One can easily get hooked on this product and yes, it delivers smooth, easy-to-manage hair. It also keeps my hair smooth for at least 2 days after the shampoo.

Overall, I am very impressed with René Furterer as they have products of excellent quality and no matter what the condition of your scalp/hair is, they have something to suit your needs and concerns. The essential oils use in the products alone are already worth the price of the products. What is remarkable about the essential oils is the amount of effort taken to extract the oils as some essential oils require more than 100kg of plants to obtain only a few grams of oil. Every drop of essential oil is so precious!

  1. Am using Forticea and Volumea for my fine limp hair with good result. If SLS is not second on the ingredient list then that will be great.
