Finished watching The Lover’s Lies last month after a few weeks of waiting for it to be subbed. Actually, I gave up waiting and watched the last 10 episodes without waiting for it to be subbed. I figured I would get the plot as long as I understood at least 75% of the dialogue. In this drama, it’s like everyone is somehow related to everyone else without knowing it.
Can two men look exactly alike even though they are not brothers? Apparently they can because in the first episode, one man leaves his pregnant wife for another woman. The wife finds an amnesiac man who has been hit by a vehicle and conveniently takes him as her husband because he looks exactly like the husband who left her. The amnesiac man has a pregnant wife who doesn’t know that he is still alive. Turns out amnesiac man is actually the son of a rich man who has a food manufacturing company, his family thinks that he is dead. I wonder how they can think him dead when they never actually saw his body.
Amnesiac man’s daughter, Tong Si Ji grows up in a family of step siblings and cousins as her mother remarried. Sadly, her stepfather passes away in a work-related accident and her mother dies from an illness leaving her to care for the younger siblings and cousins who have also lost their parents (their father dies and mother left them). Tong Si Ji )as a teenager) meets the rich kid, Yi Yi in hospital where her mother was warded and Yi Yi was recovering from some injuries (although his injuries barely warranted a long stay in hospital, how injured can the kid be when he can wander all over the hospital).
Tong Si Ji loses her stepsister and they don’t find each other until adulthood. It’s this stepsister, Xiao Xia (she changed her name from to Xia Lin) who causes her much misery and problems as Xiao Xia has held a grudge against Si Ji whom she thinks abandoned her but in fact it was Xiao Xia’s fault for running away and getting lost. Xiao Xia is unreasonably cross, spiteful and nasty to everyone save for her best friend whom she stays with. The best friend is always dressed in cosplay costumes even when she is just lounging around at home or off to the airport to catch a flight to England, wonder why.
Anyway, Si Ji and Yi Yi bump into each other in adulthood, fall deeply in love but of course there are spanners in the works in the form of misunderstandings. It was a bit irritating watching Si Ji believe her sister, Xiao Xia who had already deceived everyone by pretending to be Si Ji and worming her way into the rich family (Si Ji is the granddaughter of the man who owns the food manufacturing company) but even with such blatant deceit, Si Ji still chose to believe her rather than the man she loved, Yi Yi. If I had a sister like that, I would have chased her away, this Xiao Xia character is so obnoxious even when Si Ji is being nice and accommodating to her.
The fashion in this drama makes it a must-watch, love Yi Yi’s mother’s hats and Si Ji wears some seriously pretty dresses. Ultimately, this is a drama about family bonds and forgiveness. You can choose your friends but family is your family forever, no matter what.
