When I first started blogging a year and a half ago (sometimes it feels longer than that!), I never thought that one day there’d be 100 MAC posts on Juniper’s Journal but now that day has come and I couldn’t be more pleased because this 100th post features an interview with Shahrum Mohd Nor, MAC’s Special Events Artist during the recent launch of MAC’s Hey! Sailor Collection. I have known Shahrum even before I started Juniper’s Journal, he is one of the nicest and friendliest of MAC’s MUAs. I am always greeted with a warm smile from him and it is always a delight catching up with him. It seems like every time I see him, he sports a new hairstyle. The man has never had a bad hair day or a bad hair style. There are few MUAs as genial as him which makes it an absolute pleasure to interview Shahrum.
What is the inspiration for MAC’s Hey! Sailor Collection?
It’s inspired by the glam pin-up girls of the 1940s (e.g. Rita Hayworth, Jane Russell, Judy Garland, Veronica Lake, Hedy Lamarr and probably the most famous and popular of them all, Betty Grable as 5 million copies of her poster was printed and distributed to American GIs during WWII).
What are the must-haves from the Collection?
This is a summer collection so compulsory for men and women are the Bronzing Oil and PRO Longwear Bronzing Powder. The Bronzing Oil is not sticky and won’t stain clothes. This lightweight oil gives a tinted finish with a golden sheen and comes in 2 shades, a pink and a gold. The PRO Longwear Bronzing Powder is different from other MAC bronzing powders because it is long-lasting and lasts up to 8 hours without any touch-ups, even if skin is oily and sweaty. MAC bronzing powders are not suitable for some skin types but the PRO Longwear Bronzing Powder looks good and perfect on all skin types, it gives a sun-kissed look.
How do you convince a customer to get the bronzing powders especially Asians who prefer to look fair?
The bronzed look can be complemented with eye shadows and lip colours for a sun-kissed effect and healthy look. Most of the eye shadows in this collection lean towards cheerful colours like blue and green and these shades complement the sun-kissed summer look. For previous summer collections, colours leaned towards gold tones and frosted paler lips. For this collection, lip colours are more solid and amplified, creamy with a satin finish which gives lips a treatment, moisturising effect.
What lipstick and lip glass from this collection is suitable for every skin tone?
Red Racer Lipstick and Send Me Sailing Lip Glass (both bright yellow red) as red is an “in” colour most of the time. Red is a shade you can use all the time and is in most trends. Red is classy and classic.
What eye shadows from this collection can be paired with the red lip shades?
Barefoot (golden yellow) and Crystal Avalanche (white with reflects), either of which can be complemented with just liner and mascara. The base can be pastel shadows with emphasis on the lips
or
Combine Feeling Fresh (bright green) and Nautical (navy blue).
Which of MAC’s Spring/Summer 2012 Trends does the Collection reflect?
Ore-Inspired as there are earth tones, red, green and golden yellow shades are under warm, earthy tones.
Neo-n as there are bright, shocking disco colours.
What is so unique about the Hey! Sailor Collection?
The packaging is very special for this Collection as it has a maritime theme.
What’s the best brush for applying pigments and what do you suggest to women who don’t have much time for pigments but would love to use them?
239 brush is still the best brush for pigments. As pigments are powdery loose eye shadows, use a cream base. If you don’t have an eye shadow primer, you can use eye cream but don’t use concealer as it’ll have a cakey effect. Pigments can also be mixed with water.
