Burt’s Bees Orang Utan Island Foundation

In conjunction with World Animals Day recently, Burt’s Bees stepped out to help the Orang Utan Island Foundation (OUIF) to raise more funds for the facility. The Bukit Merah Orang Utan Island in Bukit Merah Lake Town Resort, Perak is home to more than 23 orang utans.

The campaign launch took place at Orang Utan Island itself where Ms Fiona Cheng, Marketing Manager of Burt’s Bees Asia, Ms Susana Chung, Director of Belmonde Corporation Sdn Bhd and Dr Sabapathy, CEO of Orang Utan Island Foundation were present to officiate the launch. Members of the media were given a tour around the island. The tour highlighted on the island’s operations, its research centre’s main source of funding as well as the care for the Orang Utan living on the island. The foundation’s main responsibilities include the setting up and maintenance of the island’s facilities, facilitating sponsorships and donations, organising orang utan infant relocation, displacement support, rehabilitation, and education programmes, in addition to collaborating with universities, government agencies, schools, charitable organisations and non-government organisations.

In addition to this campaign, Burt’s Bees hosted an Awareness walk to raise funds for the foundation. The foundation received immense support by sponsors such as Fitness First, Rotaract Club Port Klang Centennial and Hopital Wanita Metro. Among those present for the walk include Tan Sri Datuk Haji Mustapha Kamal founder of EMKAY Group, Mr Mohanachandran Director Rimba Mulia Board of Trustees Orang Utan Island Foundation and Dr Sabapathy CEO of Orang Utan Island Foundation. The Awareness walk raised RM4,675 from the 204 participants that took part in the walk.

Throughout the whole campaign, RM10 Burt’s Bees vouchers were also sold in all Burt’s Bees stores. These vouchers entitled the holder to redeem Burt’s Bees products at RM10 off while RM10 was donated to the OUIF which in total raised RM 17,310 (1,730 vouchers sold). Orang Utan Island products such as t-shirts, caps, bookmarks and postcards that were sold in Burt’s Bees stores raised RM 3,495.

Orang Utan Island Foundation campaign by Burt’s Bees raised a total of RM 25,480 in just one month. The campaign concluded with a cheque presented by Ms Susana Chung, Director of Belmonde Corporation Sdn Bhd to Dr Sabapathy, CEO of Orang Utan Island Foundation at Burt’s Bees, The Gardens store.

“On behalf of Burt’s Bees, we are very happy to have given a helping hand in protecting and conserving these friendly furry animals. We hope with what we have raised for this foundation does not stop here and encourages everyone as a stepping stone to play a part and contribute to the foundation even if it’s in the smallest way,” said Ms. Susana Chung, Director of Belmonde Corporation Sdn Bhd.
