Who knew that attending Brewfest would bring me to sushi tasting. There were a few food exhibitors at Brewfest and since I don’t drink beer (I am a complete and total teetotaller, how boring I know!), I ventured towards the food and came across Sushi Q. Richard, one of the owners of Sushi Q was so kind as to invite me to visit his outlet at Publika. My first introduction to Sushi Q was when they opened at MidValley in 2010. I was quite drawn to the outlet as it looked nothing like what a kiosk offering sushi would look like. As it turns out, there is method to the design of the outlets.
Don’t we all expect sushi outlets to take on traditional Japanese designs and features? Not with Sushi Q however. As Richard explained, he wanted a place where people could come and choose from a wide variety of sushi at affordable prices without compromising on the quality of the food. Sushi Q is designed for self-service and while customers can sit and eat the food at the outlets, people in a hurry can just as easily pick up their sushi selections and take them home or back to the office, as the case may be.
Sushi Q caters not just to the younger crowd but to the young-at-heart, hence the funky pop-art designs prevalent at the outlets. There’s none of the emblems and fittings one so usually associates with sushi outlets such as lanterns. Their outlets are modern and stylish, they encourage one to take a closer look at the products.
There really is an astonishing wide variety of hand rolls and sushi. Everything I saw looked appetising and so very tempting. I wished I could have a bit of everything. I love sushi especially anything which contains salmon, my favourite fish.
Seafood lovers will go dizzy with delight here as there are a number of products which contain lobster. I could hardly contain my excitement when I noticed smoked duck hand roll and duck ramen. I’ve said before that I am not a ramen fan but I can never resist anything with duck in it. Sushi Q at MidValley doesn’t offer hot foods such as rice with tempura and ramen at the moment but the other outlets at Publika and 1Utama do as does the newly opened outlet at Paradigm Mall, Kelana Jaya.
I started my sushi feast with duck ramen and I have to say I enjoyed this one more than the one I had at Yamagoya Ramen. I know it’s a bit strange to say so when Yamagoya specialises in ramen while Sushi Q doesn’t but the soup was a lot more to my liking and the duck slices were marvellously soft and delicious. I finished every strand of noodle which says something, I suppose.
Sushi Q’s hand rolls are not in the usual conical shape. These are rolls with the ingredients going all the way from top to bottom so that you have the same taste from beginning to end. With conical shaped California Rolls, there’s only rice by the time I get to the middle.
The smoked duck hand roll was superb, I wish I had enough space in my stomach for a few more. I liked this one even more than the California Roll, no complaints there but the Smoked Duck Hand Roll was rather unusual. After all, you can get California Roll practically anywhere which sells sushi but not Smoked Duck. I am salivating just thinking about it!
As for the sushi, the salmon was so fresh that they melted in my mouth. I can always tell if salmon is fresh or frozen. My favourites were the Mayo Lobster with the beancurd skin so soft and the Mango Lobster. I only had 1 Mango Lobster sushi to begin with and Richard insisted I have the entire box of 5 in addition. I thought I wouldn’t be able to finish the box but to my astonishment, I had no problems devouring all of them which is testament to how good everything is.
With this introduction to Sushi Q, I am hooked, line and sinker. I want more of Sushi Q! It’s going to be my go-to place whenever I have a sushi craving.
