High on my bucket list is visiting Corcovado Mountain in Rio de Janeiro because I want to see Christ the Redeemer statue up close. Of course it’s also been my dream to stroll down Ipanema Beach as one of my favourite childhood songs was that famous bossa nova song “Girl From Ipanema”.

If you have an interest in learning more about other countries and their culture, in particular Brasil then you won’t want to miss “Selamat Datang Brasil 2014” which is a cross cultural event celebrating Brazilian and Malaysian cultures, targeted to be an annual event. Organized by Brazil em Festa Performance Company, this colourful affair will be held for the 1st time in Malaysia, after being previously held in various other countries in the South East Asian region.

Brazil em Festa Performance Company’s Capoeira School is based in Mont Kiara and Bangsar Sports Complex. The school teaches Capoeira and other Brazilian cultural expressions and dance such as Samba, Brazilian Afro, Maculelê, Puxada de Rede and more. The Brasil em Festa Performance Company also performs the  Samba, Capoeira, Forró, and Brazilia–‐Afro Dance performances for big events around South East Asia.

“Selamat Datang Brasil 2014” will be held from the 24th to 26th of October 2014 at Avenue K. It will be a three day event packed with energy and fun with Brazilian and Malaysian themed workshops, performances and the celebration of the students’ year long training.

Some highlights of the event will include Samba, Afro Dance, Silat, Bhangra and Capoeira Workshops. A Capoeira  graduation ceremony called Batizado will also be a highlight of “Selamat Datang Brasil 2014” followed by Brazilian Cultural performances such as Maculelê and Frevo Dance as well as Malaysian Fusion Dance, Silat performances and an unforgettable Brazilian party night.

This event is open for public viewing as well as participation. Participants do not need to have any basic skill or knowledge to participate in any of the workshops. Some require a fee and some are free but all are open to everyone!

Participants can expect to learn from the best as Master teachers, Professors and Brazilian and Malaysian artists will be flown in from all over the world to teach these workshops as well as present the graduates with their new belts (cordas) in the Batizado ceremony. The teachers and masters are all based in various countries including Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and more. The event is expecting a high level of international and local participation.

“Selamat Datang Brasil 2014” was launched at Samba on Level 3 of Pavilion and this is just some of the yummy Brazilian food served there.
