Somersby Ciders
Somersby Ciders

What I love about ciders is that they can be consumed any time of day. It isn’t like other alcohol beverages like wine or beer which one normally associates with the end of the day. Somersby Ciders in particular are perfect for brunch or lunch which is what a group of bloggers were treated to last weekend at a brunch at Morganfield’s® @ Da Men Mall. The brunch was to in conjunction with Somersby’s latest campaign, Somertime, Anytime and the launch of Morganfield’s® new menu roll-out. Consumers will be able to enjoy two unique Baby Back Rib options that sets out to bring an ideal food-and-cider pairing perfect for brunch, lunch or dinner.

It seemed like there was no end to the multitude of dishes coming out of the kitchen. I lost count of how many dishes there were on the table. The thing about food reviews is that if the dish isn’t placed right in front of you and it’s a dish for sharing among a group of people, you might end up not tasting everything and this is exactly what happened because by the time I got to a certain dish, certain elements of the dish had been taken by other diners plus it’d gone stone cold and tough by the time everyone had finished taking photos.

A better way would have been to have dishes for photography so that people can take photos to their heart’s content (because there will always be people who are more interested in having their photos taken with the food than consuming the food itself which makes me wonder how credible they are as food bloggers, like seriously?) and portion out similar dishes for everyone so that we can all have an equal share. For example, I never got to taste the sausages on one dish and the chicken wings in three variations (which were totally delish) were snapped up before I could even taste all of them.

Sticky Apple Sauce Baby Back @ RM69.90 nett and Citrus Mojito Baby Back @ RM69.90 nett
Sticky Apple Sauce Baby Back @ RM69.90 nett and Citrus Mojito Baby Back @ RM69.90 nett

Anyway that aside, the highlight of the brunch were these two dishes :

  • Sticky Apple Sauce Baby Back (RM69.90 nett)

The flavour of the American summer! Juicy, tender & succulent baby back ribs slow baked for hours, grilled and smothered with Apple Cider glaze topped with Somersby Apple chutney. Served with crispy French fries & coleslaw.

  • Citrus Mojito Baby Back (RM69.90 nett)

Sticky, apple-scented ribs, slow cooked in the oven and finished on the grill covered with chunks of freshly cut diced green apples, lime & mint leaves. Served with two (2) sides of your choice.

As far as presentation is concerned, the Citrus Mojito Baby Back looked better presented as the diced applies on the Sticky Apple Sauce Baby Back looked like they came from a can which they are not. I was assured by restaurant management that they are in fact fresh diced apples. It’s just the look, could look fresher perhaps. Also, I found the meat on the Sticky Apple Sauce Baby Back tougher than on the Citrus Mojito Baby Back so between the two, my recommendation would be for the Citrus Mojito Baby Back.

Both rib selections best compliment Somersby Ciders as they have aromatic fruity flavours that is both appetising and deliciously crisp. Somersby’s fruity flavours also balances out the flavours of the lean meat, making it the perfect accompaniment for each other.

From now till 15 May 2018, pair your ribs with Somersby Apple, Blackcurrant or Sparkling Rose at only RM13 nett per bottle and RM53 nett per bucket (5 bottles). Normal price is around RM26 per bottle. This promotion is valid daily (Monday-Sunday) from 11am to 8pm at all Morganfield’s® in Malaysia.

Here are some other highlights from Morganfield’s® new menu:

Southern Fruit Tea @ RM16.90 nett
Mango & Raspberry Southern Fruit Tea @ RM16.90 nett

The Southern Fruit Tea comes in 6 delicious flavours, namely Mango, Raspberry, Green Apple, Kalamansi, Lychee and Passionfruit. This is chilled tea infused with fresh fruits and topped with a scoop of natural fruit sorbet. The mango was slightly too sweet for me but the raspberry tea is lovely, just the thing to cool you down when the weather gets too hot. THE drink for anyone who loves chilled tea!

Coffee on the Rocks @ RM13.90 nett

Pour in some syrup and fresh milk and the drink is divine!

I was ecstatic when I saw Coffee on the Rocks, beautifully presented with fresh milk and syrup on the side. The coffee cubes have been frozen and will melt gradually as milk is poured in. The drink is velvety smooth and so good that I want to go back just for this.

Sticky Wings Fiery Habanera @ RM22.90 nett
Sticky Wings Fiery Habanera @ RM22.90 nett

There are 3 variations of Sticky Wings, i.e. Fiery Habanero, Golden Egg Crunch and Honey Soy. These wings are highly addictive and one of the best items on Morganfield’s® new menu. I believe I tried Golden Egg Crunch and Honey Soy. I can’t remember tasting a third variation, either it was lost among the many dishes or all gone before I could get a chance to taste it.

Rib Rub (part of Rib Sampler @ RM239.90 nett)
Rib Rub (part of Rib Sampler @ RM239.90 nett)

The Rib Rub doesn’t have any sauce over it but it comes with a little bowl of salsa. On its own, it is rather dry so you will need to eat it with the salsa but it’s good for those who dislike sauces over their meat.

Overall, there are some hits and misses in Morganfield’s® new menu. The Roasted Pork Belly was not at all crispy by the time I tasted it but having said that, it might have been out for some time before I got a chance to taste it. The chicken dishes presented were very good and I would so recommend the Southern Fried Chicken and Sticky Wings (especially for light eaters). The rib platters are big enough for 3-4 people to share.
