dsc_3008Every year, we see more and more mooncakes being offered by hotels, establishments, bakeries etc. It’s sometimes difficult to find the ideal one for ourselves as well as friends, family, colleagues and business associates. The packaging matters as much as the taste if we are gifting the mooncakes. The Westin Kuala Lumpur offers an unusual and unique packaging this year and one can be rest assured that these are premium mooncakes.

There was a media mooncake tasting at The Westin KL’s Five Sen5es yesterday afternoon. The Chinese tea was as sublime as the variety of mooncakes which were cut into bite-sized pieces on a few plates. All the mooncakes are of the traditional baked variety which suits me fine as I am not a big fan of snow skin mooncakes. The baked ones just taste better, in my opinion.

dsc_3019Firstly, one of the hotel’s mooncake boxes deserves a mention as it’s a premium LED Light Box. It’s very special and will definitely be cherished long after the mooncakes within have been consumed. This is a personalised box which can be turned into a LED Light Box upon fixing it accordingly. As the Mooncake Festival is a festival of reunion, the exterior of the gift box is crafted with family conceptual images which carry the value of family attachments. Colourful bright lights symbolise a beautiful family and life. You would want to keep this for many years to come.

dsc_3024dsc_3027dsc_3030dsc_3025The restaurant’s dim sum and Chinese pastry Chef Chong Kon Phin demonstrated how to make the mooncakes. Each mooncake averages around 190g with the filling weighing 150g. The filling looked very sizeable to me. We were given an opportunity to make a mooncake. It’s not as easy as it looks because you first have to roll the pastry into a circular shape which is big enough to wrap around the filling and enclosing the filling also takes skill.

The Westin KL offers seven scrumptious flavours of traditional baked mooncakes from the all-time favourites of Pearl of Prosperity, Red Bean Paste to Supreme Mixed Nuts for people who love nuts. For health-conscious consumers, there’s Low Sugar Plain White Lotus Paste and Low Sugar Plain White Lotus with Single Yolk.

dsc_3021My favourite was the Green Tea Cranberries, a strong Green Tea flavour mixed with the sourness of cranberries. This didn’t taste that sweet and as a tea lover, I definitely appreciate the green tea flavour of this mooncake. You might also like to try the Pearl of Harmony, black sesame with single yolk.
