Another Day Another Ailment : Swollen Eyes

dsc_1095It’s turning out to be a rather bad start to the Year of the Dog for me what with the cold sores and a few days ago, I developed a stye on my right eyelid. I woke up very early and felt that the eye was sore so when I saw the stye, I looked for an ophthalmic ointment I used before to treat the very same thing. On hindsight, I should have known better than to use an already opened eye ointment and one which I can’t remember when I last used.

I went back to sleep and 2 hours later, the stye was gone but a bigger problem cropped up as my entire eyelid was swollen. It was sore and looked like I had been punched. Yup, definitely should have waited till the pharmacy opened and bought new eye ointment. I couldn’t get the my usual pharmacy fast enough.

The pharmacist recommended Alcon TobraDex eye drops at first but since the inflammation was on my eyelid, I asked for an ointment so that I could apply it over the skin. So the pharmacist recommended Alcon Tobradex ointment which is a gel that can be applied up to 4x daily. Tobradex contains a combination of tobramycin and dexamethasone. Tobramycin is an antibiotic. It is used to treat bacterial infections.

The first day was the worst, my eyelid was so swollen I could hardly open my eye. I did some googling for treatment and some recommended applying ice. That sounded like a good idea. I applied ice on the affected eyelid every few hours and it reduced the redness/swelling somewhat.

After two days……

dsc_1094Although there is still redness, it doesn’t look half as bad as on the first day. Now it looked almost normal. Still some healing to be done but with the combination of TobraDex and ice, I think I have speeded up healing time. This is turning out to be a memorable CNY but for the wrong reasons.
