When I received the new Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm for review, I thought it looked vaguely familiar. I just couldn’t remember where I’d seen a previous incarnation of this product.
Well, there’s nothing like Google for refreshing one’s ancient memory. Clinique came out with a Chubby Stick way back in the 1990s. In the last century, I had used their Chubby Stick, only you had to sharpen it then.
Since the Chubby Stick of yestercentury got discontinued, I went on to other Clinique lip products such as their little known fantastic lipsticks (Violet Berry being one of my all-time faves) but that’s another story altogether.
Where the previous Chubby Stick was more of a lip liner cum lipstick, the new Chubby Stick has a lip balm formulation as it contains Shea Butter, Mango Seed Butter and Jojoba Seed Oil.
In appearance, it looks like a short crayon.
Just twist the base to the right for more product, no more sharpening is a plus point. Conversely, twisting the base to the left keeps the product inside.
The shade in the picture below is 07 Super Strawberry which is a colour which enhances the colour of my lips. It goes on pretty sheer and glides on smooth as butter.
In terms of moisturisation level, I found it to be average. It’s neither too dry nor ultra hydrating.
However, ladies who do not like the heavier texture of lipsticks or the stickiness of lip glosses yet want a hint of colour on their lips may find this to be a good alternative to using other forms of lip colour products.
As this is essentially a lip balm, do not expect the colour to be long-lasting. It’s perfect for days when you don’t want a strong colour on your lips yet don’t wish to leave the house with no make-up on.
Other shades are Pecan Pie, Mimosa, Grapefruit and Berry Burst. They are 3g and retail for RM50 which I find reasonable considering a lot of Korean and drugstore brands’ lip colour products retail for just a bit less than that.
