If You Don’t Mean It, Don’t Say It

the red queen

It’s so very easy to say something

Without giving what you say any thought

In the beginning I was so trusting

But most promises mean diddly-squat

We always want to believe there’s good in others

Which is why we give them the benefit of the doubt

But perhaps only a mother’s word matters

Because so many promise something and then cop out

Whatever happened to “my word is my honour”

Doesn’t anyone ever remember what they say

It’s like water being thrown into a harbor

This leads to so much dishonour and decay

What I’d really like is for people to think carefully

Before the words come tumbling out of their mouth

If they don’t mean what they say truly

Then it’s inevitable for our relationship to go south

Promises that mean so little

Really reflect the people that they are

Can’t help feeling a bit bitter

When their words mean nada!
