Growing up in the 70s, there were few fast food chains around compared to today. One of the rare outings of my childhood were to that most iconic and American of fast food establishments, A & W in PJ. The root beer then just tasted better and I could get my fill of their Coney Dog. I grew up liking hot dogs a lot and when I visited US, I thought the hot dogs from street vendors were so much more delicious than what is available here.
People are getting much more innovative nowadays, it’s about thinking out of the box. Who knew you can create such fusion of flavours in a hot dog as is available at Hotodogu, a 3 week old eatery located at LG-21, The Gardens? It’s like a combination of Eastern and Western flavours, not quite the hot dog I have been used to up to now.
Hotodogu offers gourmet hot dogs and rice burgers. Prices are between RM10-15 with an option to add on a drink and fries for a few more Ringgit. Scanning the menu will only take a minute at most as there’re 6 types of hot dogs and 4 types of rice burgers (the rice burger bun is made by Hotodogu while the hot dog buns are from a supplier).
I didn’t have to mull over my choice for long as there was only one option for my introduction to Hotodogu – The Hotodogu which is their “Most Wanted”. The sauces are teriyaki and wasabi mayo, there’s grilled onions and seaweed. I love seaweed but have never had it on a hot dog. The hot dog is sizeable but not too huge for the fairer sex to finish. They’re generous with the condiments. You can choose whether you want a chicken/beef sausage with this and their other hot dogs. There’s a crunchy texture to The Hotodogu thanks to the seaweed and the grilled onions were aromatic and an appetite pleaser. This would be a very plain and ordinary hot dog without the seaweed. The sauces blended well together but as I was half way through, I felt it became a bit too overwhelmingly salty. I felt like I needed another drink in order to finish this.
Other variations of hot dogs are Chilli Cheese Dog, Chilli Dog, BBQ Crunch, Mushroom Mania and Keep It Simple. Keep It Simple is as basic as you can get as there’s chilli/tomato sauce, mustard and raw/grilled onions. I am tempted to try the Mushroom Mania next as there’s creamy button mushroom sauce & shitake mushrooms.
If you prefer burgers, there’s the Furaido Chicken/RM11.90 which is a fried juicy chicken fillet with Japanese Worcestershire Sauce and mayo. I didn’t try this but it looks appetizing and extremely juicy, doesn’t it?
Add on drinks & fries for an extra RM4.90.
