Even on days I go out without a trace of make-up, I never forget to slather on sunscreen. It’s become a fixed habit as sunscreen protection is more important as I get older. After all, over-exposure to the sun can cause premature aging or in my case, accelerate aging! Moreover, I don’t want any more dark spots which can easily form if I spend too much time in the sun without adequate sunscreen protection.
The terms “UVA”, “UVB” and “broad-spectrum sunscreen” have been bandied around by beauty brands when it comes to their sunscreens but what do they actually mean and why do we need broad-spectrum sunscreen? Why are certain ingredients such as titanium dioxide, zinc dioxide and avobenzone commonly found and important in sunscreens? Why are some sunscreens much more expensive than others and what ingredients do they have which makes them unique from others?
Well, some of the answers can be found in this informative website which I think summarises the answers I was looking for with regard to the importance of using a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection. However, what sets Kiehl’s Ultra Light Daily UV Defense SPF 50 PA+++ apart from the rest in the market?
Firstly, let’s look at the ingredients. The product contains photostable ingredients. i.e. Mexoryl SX and Mexoryl XL sun filters to provide skin with effective UVA and UVB broad-spectrum, sunscreen protection which gives longer lasting protection. The oil-free formulation helps to protect against the appearance of dark spots, freckles, wrinkles, skin darkening and protects against premature skin aging. It also contains antioxidant Vitamin E and nourishing Glycerin for more intense moisturisation. Since it contains titanium dioxide, it should be effective against the entire UVA spectrum.
There’s sufficient sunscreen protection for me with the SPF 50 PA+++ which means over 16 hours of sun protection. Even if you applied this before sun rise, you won’t have to re-apply until the next day (unless you’re going swimming of course as I don’t think this sunscreen is waterproof). How did I get 16 hours? Let’s do the math:-
1. The normal time to get sunburnt is 20 minutes.
2. SPF 50 means you get 50 x 20 minutes protection = 1000 minutes.
3. Divide 1000 by 60 (minutes) and you get more than 16.
If you dislike the heavy feel of sunscreens, you’d like this one as it’s so light and it feels more like a moisturiser than a sunscreen. Although it isn’t that fluid in consistency, it isn’t horribly heavy and I don’t feel like it is clogging my pores. It’s a good make-up base as my skin feels hydrated with this underneath my foundation.
Although the tube is only 30ml, it will last for quite some time even with daily use. I look forward to using this one everyday much more than other sunscreens I have but don’t take my word for it, try it for yourself as Kiehl’s is generously giving samples of this product this month.

The name “Ultra Light Daily UV Defense” says it all… “Helps Protect Against Pigmentation Irregularities and Premature Skin Aging” add more yum to this yummy sunblock!
I’m not used to put on sunblock but because of my job that requires me to be outdoor most of the time, I started slowly on implementing this step into my daily routine. I was told by a friend who have pigmentation problem “to start early”. Prevention is always better right? But I never seems to find a sunblock that I like until a few days ago when I redeemed a sample to try. You’re right! It’s not heavy on the face at all and I do feel comfortable even after makeup. Because it’s SPF50 PA+++, I skipped my moisturizer that contain SPF and replace with a non-SPF moisturizer.
I think the price is quite reasonable as a little goes a long way. Totally a good worth sunblock.
I never a fan of sunblock because it often make my skin feeling sticky and leaving a layer of veil on my skin. But not with Kiehls “Ultra Light Daily UV Defense” as it doesn’t feel a single weight and discomfort after the application. It’s SPF50 PA++ is just the right amount of protection needed in our sizzling weather.
Sunblock is a must to me no matter how late I wake up for work or how lazy I am. As my age is around 30’s so I seriously have to make an effort to it so my hubby won’t run away =p
However I really hate those that make my face oily by the end of the day which most of the brands out there even though they claimed it won’t make your face oily and yet I end up with greasy oily face. yucks!!!
Suprisingly with Khiels Ultra Light Daily UV Defense as it claims it’s oil free and it’s sooo light!! The best part is with just a smal amount of usage, it totally can cover my whole face without shortage supply =D
I don’t know others but somehow whenever I walk under the sun, it feel totally protected and the difference where when the sun hit me – I totally can feel the sun hit to my hands (like really into my skin) whereas my face no effect… (I know this sounds crazy)
Another point I would like to share is that this sunblock totally absorb really fast… I don’t have to wait long to continue with my makeup routine.
<3 it to the MAX!!!
Totally totally going to buy this when I get my salary this month….!!! =)
What I love about the Kiehls Ultra Light Daily UV Defense is it is so lightweight and does not feel greasy like regular sunscreens which I hate. And also it helps to protect again dark spots which I tend to get easily.
Thank You!
I always put on sun block before I am out of my house everyday. It’s important for everyone especially for us who are living in Tropical countries.
However I am actually quite hesitate to apply sun block because most of the brands I tried always leave sticky feeling on my face, and made my combination skin looks very oily after a few hours.
Thanks Junipers journal for introducing Kiehls Ultra Light Daily UV Defense SPF 50 PA+++ to me. Thanks Kiehls for it’s kindness to offer me sample of it foc.
I love Kiehls Ultra Light Daily UV Defense SPF 50 PA+++ because it is not sticky and greasy. My face is not that oily eventhough I put it on for a whole day. The price is reasonble for such a good product and I would recommend this great sun block to my friends and family.
I’ve always been a lazy girl when it comes to beauty and skincare. But since I started working last year and noticed the deterioration in my skin’s condition, I finally understood the meaning behind “There are no ugly women, only lazy ones.” And I’ve been trying hard to take care of my skin ever since, researching for the best products and trying out different products carefully.
I was lucky enough to receive a couple of samples from Kiehl’s from an event last week. Before I started using, I wanted to read a bit of reviews of them since it’s a very pricey brand, if I were to come to a liking on the product, I would want my money’s worth of it.
Focusing specifically on the Kiehl’s Ultra Light Daily UV Defense with SPF 50 PA+++, I’m extremely happy with the product. With this particular Kiehl’s product, I love the lightweight feeling. I have naturally oily skin, so I’m very careful about using non-greasy products that may turn me into a pot of oil by midday. I’m quite happy with this product since I didn’t have to blot my face with blotting paper until almost the end of the day. And since my skin is more protected from the sun now, I feel that a little less saggy now. I’ve been told from dermatologists in facial parlours that my skin looks almost like a 30-year-old woman’s skin, despite being only 22 this year. Hurts your self esteem hearing that, doesn’t it? Despite only using Kiehls Ultra Light Daily UV Defense for a week, I can already feel the difference.
Since I was young, whenever I put sunblock when before going swimming or playing in the sun, I remember feeling uncomfortable wearing sunblock because of it’s texture and smell. That is why I’ve never experimented with anymore sunblock. Now that I’m already in my 20’s and with our extreme weather lately, I feel that it’s starting to be more important for me to invest on a good one. In fact, I think sunblock is the most important product Malaysian women need in this crazy weather.
I truly apologise for this long post. But I really want to come up with a good review because it’s such a promising product for me. I hope someone will actually read my whole ramble and get something out of it. I know I certainly learned something from yours. Thanks for writing such a detailed review. This is the first blog post I stumbled upon in your blog, and I guarantee it won’t be my last.
Looking forward to more of your posts! Thanks again! 🙂
Oh my, got a sample of the Ultra Light Daily UV Defense with SPF 50 PA+++ from Kiehl’s in the nick of time! I was super excited to try it after reading your review and was eager to find a chance to go to the nearest Kiehl’s store! I am currently using a sunscreen from a famous skincare brand and I must say, it’s been good to a lazy girl like me so far. I’ve tried several sunscreen products over the past few years but most, if not all were just too oily. I eventually grew tired of searching for the right one and I stopped using one.
My daily skincare routine used to consist of only cleanser and the occasional toner and moisturizer at night, mainly because I was one of the “lazy women” mentioned by Jessica, haha. As a result, my skin began showing signs of dryness and pigmentation due to constant exposure to sun without protection. However, I went back to the 3-step skincare routine after a skincare workshop talk and started using a sunscreen as well. I must say that my skin has significantly improved for the past month after I made changes in my daily routine. Although I now have to wake up at least half an hour early to get ready but I think it’s worth it as having healthy skin is the answer to natural beauty and self-confidence.
Now that my skin is back on track, I’ve been looking forward to experimenting with and gaining more knowledge on skincare products and tips. I was keen on trying the Kiehl’s sunscreen to see if it could give my current sunscreen a run for its money. I must say that to my surprise, the product is as good as its word and can definitely go head-to-head with the one I’m currently using! Kiehl’s is slightly less greasy and I like that it’s non-comedogenic. The added antioxidant vitamin E and glycerin for moisturization is another plus point! At the end of the day, I do not feel that my skin is sticky or greasy in any way. I was really amazed at how lightweight this sunscreen feels on my skin. However, as I only redeemed one sample for testing, I could not see any significant difference on my skin hence I could only write how I feel about it upon application.
I personally mix and match my skincare products and I have products from the regular pharmacy to the pricey skincare store. However, I personally don’t mind paying a little more for a product that works well for my skin. The price is slightly steep for a student like me (and because of that, I have to be rather thrifty) but I definitely agree that a little goes a long way and to me, it is priceless when you have beautiful healthy skin.
I would definitely give this sunscreen a try once mine finishes! It would be awesome if I can actually win one too. 😀 Dear author, thank you for introducing this product to me. I really enjoy reading your posts and I’ve been learning so much about skincare from you. Well, no offence to cosmetics but I can do makeup to save my life. Haha! Hopefully, I will find the courage to explore makeup one day. Until then, I will look forward to reading your reviews on skincare products and learn from them. Much love!
xx
I have oily skin and I been using this product for more than a week now under my usual MAC Pro Longwear SPF10 foundation. I have to say that this product’s lightweight and non-sticky texture definitely works for those with oily skins. On top of that, you don’t really need to use much, as a little goes a long way. Furthermore, it is water based, and does not produce a white mask-like cast on your face when applied, unlike certain brands of sunscreen out there with a similar level of SPF protection which do so!
Based on my experience trying out numerous sunscreen products throughout the years, this one is definitely one of the better products to hit the market, and it will definitely challenge those from the leading brand names which are currently on sale. It it certainly a product to be considered for purchase when I have finished using my current sunscreen product.
Verdict: Highly Recommended!
