Chapstick or lip balm has been around for more than a century, having been invented by Dr. C.D. Fleet from Lynchburg, Virginia in the 1880s. The very first one looked like a small wickless candle wrapped in tin foil. Lip balm has come a long way since those days and come in all forms and types.
Maybelline’s new Baby Lips SPF20 Lip Balm promises baby soft lips with up to 8 hours of moisturisation. It contains their exclusive Botanical Cell Repair Concentrate as well as Centella Asiatica, a small herbaceous plant that combats ageing because of its high anti-oxidant properties. Centella Asiatica is also said to deliver plumpness, hydration, replenished elasticity and stimulate natural collagen production.
The press sample sent to me is Energizing Orange which is in vibrant orange and purple colours on the outside. I like the packaging colours on all the Lip Balms, the other 3 being Smoothing Cherry, Refreshing Menthol and Antioxidant Berry.
There is a hint of orange scent in Energizing Orange, it should not pass muster for those who are scent-conscious as the scent isn’t overpowering in the least. I thought my lips would look slightly orangey but nope, it’s colourless.
It definitely gave me much softer lips immediately thanks to the Shea Butter, no doubt. Although it has SPF20, I used it overnight to test how moisturising it was. I woke up in the middle of the night and my lips still felt as soft as a few hours before.
Baby soft lips are here to stay with this lip balm as part of my beauty arsenal. The swivel tube makes it easy and convenient to apply anywhere and everywhere. Whether it will maintain skin elasticity and improve suppleness remains to be seen but I have my doubts about that as I don’t think a lip balm can produce such skincare benefits.
It retails at RM10.90.
