Last night, there were several major events in the city but none more glamorous than the L’oreal Colour Trophy 2012 Grand Finale held at KL Convention Centre. Ladies were bedecked in long gorgeous gowns and men looked dashing in formal attire. It was the hairdressing industry’s Oscar night as the top hairdressers in Malaysia gathered to witness the creations of the 14 top finalists, L’oreal Professionnel’s Artistic Ambassadors and International Guest Artiste. Put it this way, the creme de la creme or A-list of Malaysia’s hairdressers were all gathered under one roof to showcase or watch the truly awesome creations.
It was hours of watching one fantastic hair creation after another. Malaysian hairstylists have to be among the most creative in the world – it was awe-inspiring to see the hair styles together with the floaty and ethereal Eric Choong gowns on the models.
A Tribute To Beauty was chosen as the theme for this year’s competition as it paid homage to the success and tribulations of famous hairdressers with styles that are distinctively French. Most of the styles were very avant-garde and the colours were beautiful, there were pinks, amethysts, purples.
There were subsidiary awards such as Editor’s Choice Award from Bluinc magazines, Estetica Cover Award, Shu Uemura Makeup Award, Sin Chew Readers’ Choice Award and The Clove Readers’ Choice Award but what everyone was waiting for in high anticipation was who would walk away with the L’oreal Professionnel Colour Trophy 2012. If I was one of the judges, it’d take me a long time to make up my mind as I thought all the finalists came up with stunning creations.

Prior to the winner’s announcement, guests were treated to a spellbinding hair show featuring the 5 L’oreal Artistic Ambassadors who lent their expertise in creating looks inspired by L’oreal Professionnel Spring/Summer 2012 Colour Collection. Entitled ‘Artisanal Expressions’, Albert Nico, founder of Albert Nico Boutique Salon; Andy Chan, founder of Andy Chan Hair Studio, Kevin Woo, founder of Centro Hair Salon; Miko Au, founder of Miko Galerie and Simon Koh, founder of ELLE Hair Studio paid homage to “The Parisian House of Hairdressing”, celebrating the tradition of Parisian haute couture where theart of hairdressing is revered, practiced and perfected. The showcase transmitted the idea that hair as a piece of garment can both embody and transcend fashion, therefore inspiring the hairdressers to see their craft as bespoke couture.
