Sharul Channa has been called many things, from ‘Pottymouth’ to ‘Singapore’s Only Full-Time Female Stand-Up Comic”, however, one label that is befitting, is that she is arguably one of the funniest comedians to come out of Singapore in recent years. Since her first performance at an open mic event at a Singaporean comedy club years ago, Sharul has gone on to perform in Australia, Malaysia, the Philippines, China, and India, even making history in the process when she became the first Singaporean comedian to be selected for The Melbourne International Comedy Festival in 2016.
Now, she returns to Malaysia, only this time with her 2nd stand-up comedy special, Sharul Weds Sharul. This one-woman, hour long show, is a rib-tickling take on Indian weddings, from couple hashtags, to the extensive wedding buffet, from Aunt Sunita to walking around the fire seven times for a promise of seven lifetimes. It is observational comedy at its best, as Sharul finds answers to some of the burning questions that we have about Indian weddings.
Sharul’s rise to fame did not come easy, in her early years, she had to struggle in a comedic scene, that was dominated by household names and while she did consider giving up, she turned her challenges into success, going on to become the first female Singaporean stand-up comic to do her own solo stand-up show, ‘Pottymouth’.
“On stage, I’m 150% of who I am in real life, and it’s actually a good thing because it keeps me extremely honest when I blare out truths about myself out loud.”
Her razor-sharp, self-deprecating comedic style, has lent Sharul a universality that allow for her shows to transcend nationalities, race, and gender.
